Vertical Synchronisation (VSync) creates stability by synchronising the game’s image frame rate with the PC’s refresh rate. If it’s not synchronised, it may cause screen tearing and stop you from playing the game. As a result, you will notice horizontal or vertical splits in the game application screen.
Is the gaming device’s top portion of the display showing a different frame than the bottom? You might have disabled VSync. Besides, the screen tearing issue might occur even when VSync is enabled.
It happens when the PC or laptop’s graphics card fails to connect to the monitor. Restart the device and check if that solves the screen glitch.
The VSync technology usually helps to eliminate screen tearing. However, it limits most of the game FPS to measure the PC’s refresh rate.
Besides, VSync can drop the multiplayer game’s FPS rate. Thus, it will be better to disable this feature to avoid unwanted game lags.
How to Stop Screen Tearing without enabling the Monitor’s VSync technology?
There are many ways to fix the screen tearing issues from Windows laptops. Whether the device uses an Nvidia or AMD GPU, you must disable the frame rate restriction. Besides, you must disable Nvidia VSync and AMD Free Sync to stop getting this screen frame rate issue.
Here are some effective solutions to prevent screen tearing while playing the games:
Adjust the Screen Resolution and Monitor’s Refreshing Rate
Incorrect refresh and resolution rate is the most common reason behind screen tearing. Thus, modifying the monitor’s refresh and resolution rate can fix the issue. Turn on the Windows 10/11 laptop and press the Windows and S keys together.
Write “resolution” in the search box and choose “Change display resolution”.
Head towards “Display resolution” and set the correct resolution for the PC.
Close the Settings window and check if that solves the screen tearing issues. However, if the error persists, press the Windows and I keys together and go to “System”.
Choose “Display” when the pop-up menu opens and tap on “Advanced Display”. Click “Choose a refresh rate” and select the rate that you want.
The Windows 10/11 PC will display the refresh rate that supports the monitor. Choose the correct one from the list and turn off the Windows laptop. Restart the device, open the game, and it won’t further cause screen tearing issues.
Check the GPU Driver Version
Screen tearing issues might occur if the GPU driver is incompatible with the monitor. Thus, you must downgrade or update the driver to resolve the issue. Press the Windows and R keys together and write “devmgmt.msc” in the pop-up box. Hit the “Enter” button to access the Device Manager program.
Additionally, you can press the Windows and X keys to access “Device Manager” from the list. Double-tap on “Display Adapters” and wait until the PC shows the GPU name. Right-click on the AMD or NVIDIA graphics and click “Update Driver”.
Choose “Search automatically for driver” when the new window pops up. The Windows 10/11 device will then find a suitable driver for the monitor. Click “Install Now” and wait until the PC completes the driver installation process. Restart the device after 2-3 minutes and check if the screen tearing issue persists.
How to Downgrade to the Previous GPU Driver Version?
The PC might cause screen tearing issues even after updating the GPU drivers. Usually, it occurs when the monitor doesn’t support the installed driver. Try to downgrade the driver version and check if that solves the issue.
Press the Windows and S keys together and write “Device Manager” in the search box. Double-tap “Device Manager” from the searched results and navigate to “Display Adapters”.
Search for the NVIDIA or AMD graphics card and right-click on it. Select “Properties” from the drop-down menu and locate “Drivers”. Tap on “Roll Back Driver” and select the reason for downgrading the GPU driver.
Choose “Yes” when the confirmation message appears on the PC screen. The Windows 10/11 device will then uninstall the current driver version.
It will reinstall the previous GPU driver version within 10-15 minutes. Restart the gaming computer and play the online games without screen tearing issues.
Disable NVIDIA VSync
NVIDIA allows users to fix display rate flickering issues using the VSync feature. However, you might often experience an unwanted screen glitch when this feature is on. Turn on the PC first and ensure it is connected to a stable internet connection.
Right-click on the desktop and choose “NVIDIA Control Panel” when the pop-up menu opens. Head towards “3D Settings” when the new window appears and locates “Manage 3D Settings”. Set the maximum frame rate to “60FPS”.
Do you have a higher 75Hz monitor? Then, choose “75FPS” as the display’s frame rate. It will also help you to eliminate screen tearing and boost the game’s performance.
Search for “vertical Sync (VSync) and move its toggle from right to left. Restart the game and check if the image is glitching while playing the game.
Change the NVIDIA Configuration
NVIDIA Vysnc might not always help you fix screen tearing errors. You might have to make other changes in the GPU settings to eliminate the problem.
Right-click on the desktop, select “NVIDIA Control Panel”, and go to “Latency Mode”. Set the latency mode to “Ultra ” to avoid unwanted game lags.
Navigate to “Ambient Occlusion” and set it to “Performance”. Go to “Power Management mode” and select “Prefer maximum performance”.
Afterwards, head towards “Quality” and set it to “High Performance”. Enable the “Triple buffering” feature to reduce the input latency.
Additionally, NVIDIA users must locate “Trilinear optimisation”. Turn on this feature if you have selected “High Performance”.
Navigate to “Negative LOD Bias” and click “Allow” when prompted. Restart the Windows PC, and stream the multiplayer game without screen tearing issues.
Disable AMD VSync
The latest Windows 10/11 laptops have AMD graphics. Thus, you must first check which GPU the device has. If it has the AMD Radeon software, right-click on the desktop.
Choose “AMD Radeon” when the pop-up menu opens and head towards “Settings”. Select “Graphics” and locate “Global Graphics” afterwards.
Navigate to “Graphics Profile” and tap on “eSports” to enable “Radeon Anti-lag”. You will notice that the “Radeon Image Sharpening” will be enabled by default. Now, it’s time to disable “Vertical Refresh (VSync)”.
Additionally, AMD Radeon users must go to the “Advanced” tab and make the following changes:
- Ensure to disable the “Morphological Anti-Aliasing” feature
- Set “Anti-Aliasing” to “Use application settings”
- Change the “Anti-Aliasing Method” to “Multisampling”
- Turn off “Anisotropic Filtering”
- Set “Texture Filtering Quality” to “Performance”
- Enable the “Surface Format Optimisation” feature
- Set “Tessellation Mode” to “Override application settings”
- The graphics card’s “Maximum Tessellation Level” should be “8x”
After changing the AMD Radeon settings, go to “Display”. Choose the correct graphics card from the list and enable “VRR”. It will eliminate screen tearing issues and reduce game lags without VSync.
Lastly, Disable the Game’s “Full-Screen” Optimisations
Right-click on the game and choose “Properties” from the pop-up menu. Head towards “Compatibility” and locate “Disable full-screen optimisations”. Disable this option and tap on “Apply”, and close the game’s properties window. Restart the Windows computer and play the game without screen tearing issues.
